“Our Environment, Our ‘Future’—Attending The Anambra State Tree-Planting Event.

Today, I had the privilege of representing the Mayor of Idemili South LGA, Hon. Mrs. Amaka Obi (Iyom Ifeabata), at the tree-planting event held in Awka to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Anambra State, hosted by our dear governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR.

This year’s anniversary theme, “Our Environment, Our Future”, is a timely reminder that the Anambra we celebrate today must be protected and preserved for generations yet unborn. As Mr. Governor rightly noted, our anniversary is not merely about remembering the past; it is a call to action for the healthier, more liveable, and prosperous Anambra we are building together.

Anambra is facing a serious environmental threat, particularly from the incessant erosion ravaging several of our communities. This challenge demands deliberate, courageous, and sustained action. It is therefore commendable that the Solution Administration has placed environmental protection at the centre of its development agenda, treating environmental violations and degradation with the seriousness of a state emergency.

The Anambra Environmental Management Protection and Administration Law 2024, assented to by Mr. Governor, provides a strong framework for tackling severe erosion, combating flooding, and eliminating improper waste disposal. Today’s tree-planting exercise is another practical expression of this commitment, as the government and Ndi Anambra came together to plant trees and strengthen our collective response to the environmental challenges confronting our state.

We sincerely commend our dear Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, for taking the lead and championing innovative solutions that will secure the future of Anambra. Building a green, clean and sustainable Anambra requires all hands to be on deck.

For us in Idemili South, we are intentional about confronting and checkmating the environmental threats in our communities. We will work closely with the structures and mechanisms put in place by the Anambra State Government to ensure that these policies are effectively implemented, our environment is protected, and our communities are rescued from the devastating effects of erosion, flooding and indiscriminate waste disposal.

As Anambra marks 35 years, let us remember: the environment we protect today is the future we bequeath to our children.

Hon. Oluchukwu Ilogbenu (Olutek)

APGA Mayoral Candidate, Idemili South LGA.
